The National Jewelry Institute will inaugurate the 2008 Designer Showcase as its first exhibition of contemporary jewelry from leading designers, including globally recognized luxury jewelry brand, Cinta by John Hardy.

The exhibition will include some of the latest creations from Cinta.

Cinta, which means ‘love’ in Balinese, was launched in the fall of 2002 under the creative direction of John Hardy's head designer, Guy Bedarida.

“Cinta is an ever-evolving collection with designs taking form from several streams of inspiration: travels in Asia, old European jewelry traditions, nature, and pure fantasy”, Bedarida said. “The Cinta collection has been one of the most fascinating challenges of my career. Every setting must ‘respect’ its stone, yet maintain the signature John Hardy design aesthetic. I wanted each piece to feel organic, as if the stone had been born in the setting.”

Close to forty designers are represented in the show, which will feature creations from American, European and Asian companies including Bulgary, Cartier, Graff, and Judith Ripka. Leading jewelry expert serves as curator of Designer Showcase. Guest curators include Beth Rudin DeWoody, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the World Gold Council.

Designer Showcase will open with a press luncheon for the designers at The Forbes Gallaries in New York Monday. The jewelry will be on display through June 28.

Which Pearl Is Fake And Which Is Real

This article is about real pearls, both natural and cultured. First, the term 'pearl' should be applied only to natural pearls, formed in a mollusk when some event in nature induces the oyster or mussel to form a pearl. These pearls are quite rare and are the pearls of antiquity before pearl farmers learned to culture pearls. Freshwater pearls fished from the rivers in the USA are natural pearls, but now-a-days, most freshwater pearls are also cultured in freshwater pearl farms.

In any event, naturally forming or cultured, such pearls are formed in the oyster or mussel and are not fakes. The real difference in the totally natural pearl and the cultured pearls is what makes the pearl start to grow and the thickness of the nacre. Nacre is the pearly layers that make a pearl so lovely. The natural pearl will have very thick nacre, generally forming in concentric rings around some starting source or irritation to the mollusk. A large natural pearl is very, very rare. Cultured pearls generally use a 'core' of mother-of-pearl, the shell of the mollusk.

The bead core goes into the mollusk and nacre is formed around the core. The core determines the overall shape of the pearl. How long the oyster is allowed to let the pearl grow determines the thickness of the nacre. Thicker nacre is better. Best of all is thick nacre and a smooth, almost blemish free surface. Pearls grown inside the mussel or oyster do have a gritty feel to the tooth.

Fake pearls are made by coating a core of some sort (mother-of-pearl, plastic, etc.) with a plastic, a kind of paint containing ground fish scales or other stuff that look pearly to the eye. Generally, the fakes do not have a gritty feel to the tooth. Most may be identified with a little practice and a 10x jewelers loupe or microscope. The way to do it is to compare real pearls with some known fakes. The fakes almost always show a grittier look to the surface and not the more smoothly formed natural nacre.

The look is grittier but the feel to a tooth is smoother. After some practice comparisons, most fakes are fairly easily identified. Still, some are hard to detect without very thorough testing sometimes using solvents and acids which attack the real pearl nacre but not the plastic fakes and visa versa.

Other than that, a look at the drilled holes in the beads will help. Since the pearl is formed naturally without a hole, the hole must be drilled. The surface of the pearl at the drill hole will not 'sink in' or 'rise up' as is seen in many fakes that are formed and coated with the holes already made to the core. In the real pearl, the nacre will be smooth with the drill hole and might even be chipped a bit. Some folks recommend having a dentist do an x-ray to see what is inside.

Still, unless a person is very, very familiar with reading the images the results are very iffy. A core will look like a core whether in a fake or a cultured pearl. A core will not be present to any large extent in a pearl formed freely in the ocean but those pearls just are not around or to be had except in very small sizes.

Using a good loupe (hand held magnifier) of 10 power is likely the best home test. Of course, try the teeth first! Then look at the drill holes and the surface compared to a good cultured pearl. There is not a one-in-all test I can recommend. Some of this will simply require some 'pearls' of real and fakes for comparison. When you look through a 10x maginfier at the surface of most fakes, the surface might look gritty, uneven, "orange peel" as in paints or even flaked off in small places.

There is a difference difficult to describe. The comparison of the nacre of a pearl to the fake surface is a good indication for use at home, following your teeth, of course. Again, look for the rising or falling surface at the drill holes, like a "painted surface" has sunk into the hole or been pulled up from it.

Even the jewelers are fooled once in a while but not often. Have you seen Mabe pearls? These are the large 'half pearls' often seen in rings and pendants. Some years ago some really good fakes hit the market and were being sold at very competitive prices -- that is, compared to the real ones. Many were sold and bought as the real thing! The testing for these required disassembly of the fake mabes plus solvent and acid tests. A lot of buyers were taken in on this one, likely never to know they bought and later sold fake mabe pearls.

If you get pearls and you are not sure if they are fake or real and you have a hard time to tell them apart, go to you closest jewelry store and talk to them. See if they can run some of the test that I just menched to you. They will be able to tell you if the pearls are fake or not. But like is said it is very hard to tell some of the real ones from the fake ones. You need to be careful when you are shopping around for any kind of jewelry and make sure that you go to a jewelry store that you know are good.

Replacement Of Lost Earrings

The news I have gotten is that earrings purchased or received within a few years may likely be replaced if the manufacturer is identified; however, if the earrings are several years old, that style may no longer be available for direct replacement. A first step which you have likely considered is to go to the business selling the earrings in the first place. That business would be most able to quickly identify the vendor and perhaps replace the missing one. Keep in mind, the earrings may only be available in a pair, not a single unit.

To identify the maker can often be difficult and I stopped trying to do that for questioners here at allexperts. Many makers are out there and much jewelry is imported with various makers' marks. Identification becomes almost the job for a detective armed with books and books of makers marks! To read the markings which are generally small on earrings, you will need to get a good 10x lens or go to a jewelry store with a microscope and ask if they can read the mark or let you have a look. Still, the mark if recognized by the jeweler will help but if unknown you are back to a difficult task.

DUPLICATING THE EARRING

If the earrings are precious metal, meaning gold generally and are not costume jewelry, there is a reasonable possibility of having one made. Costume jewelry simply cannot be duplicated by jewelers both because of the metals and finishes used and because cost to duplicate are high. If the earrings are precious metal, you do have a chance.

WHERE TO GO

Since the jewelers you have visited did not seem interested in making or matching your earring, you should try a local business which sells quality jewelry but also has a bench jeweler working in-house. The business should also do custom work. The bench jeweler is the one who does repairs and makes custom jewelry.

Then, ask the clerks about replacing the missing earring and if they can order a "mounting" or similar earring from their vendors. If so, you are in luck! If not, the jeweler can look at the earring and see if that is an item they can make for you. Keep in mind; cost will likely be more than the original price since this may turn out to be one-of-a-kind work.

Often, a similar design may be purchased and the jeweler can modify to make the purchased earring match the original. This last approach is less costly than having the earring made from scratch. As last resort, try a jewelry business specializing only in custom work to have the item made. I would try that business last since many full service jewelers who do custom work have large vendor bases to check for an earring which may be purchased, avoiding the need of custom work. The jeweler who does strictly custom work will likely not have that vendor base to call upon.

When the earring is a post, with the omega back going over that when worn, adjustment is not very difficult. Generally this means taking a nice jeweler's smooth nosed pliers and bending the base of the omegas downward. This makes more room between the ear and the back, with the post still there to hold the earring on the ear.

Now, with no post and only the omega back, each must be adjusted the same way but only a tiny bit at a time. The earring must be firm enough to hold the earlobe but not so tight as to be uncomfortable.

A NOTE OF WARNING

Omega backs are great. The problems come when these are on hollow and lightweight earrings. Another problem arises if the backs are not very well soldered (brazed) to the earring body. Bending will sometimes cause the base part of the omega to break off; with hollow and thin earrings, the earring can actually tear out a piece of gold, leaving a very difficult repair job.

I would try this only if familiar with doing it! There is a tactile "education" or "touch" needed to feel how the metal is working when bent.

MY ADVICE

Let a jeweler do it! They can bend a little; let you try the earrings for fit, bend again if needed till the comfortable fit is achieved.

If you break the earrings...well, then you will pay to have repairs made. If the jeweler does it, they should let you know up front who is responsible if there is breakage. A competent jeweler should be able to tell you up front if there is an obvious risk in loosening the earring backs.

This system allows you to mix convertible bayonet end necklaces with diamond and precious stone bayonet recipient clasps.

In the last year I have purchased an 18ct gold cable necklace by Jorg Heinz and 2 interchangeable clasps. One of the patented clasps from Marcel Roelofs is a large beautifully smooth carved rutilated quartz, topped with a gold bezel set diamond.
The second interchangeable clasp is the modern looking 18ct gold heart shown far right. You can see the male/female bayonet fitting here in the photograph left. It's a nifty bit of patented engineering. Once in position, the closure is incredibly neat and tailored in appearance.

Puff effects within links and motifs are a hot trend to watch. Notice how my heart has a puff effect. In some cases, new techniques use electroforming to pump air volume into pieces. The technique has been especially successful in creating 'gold pearls' which look weighty, but are not. The puffed pearls can then be mixed with heavy real pearls and appear to be as equally dense.
This 3D puff style heart clasp also comes as a version with one face platinum and the reverse face gold, so that can add an another dimension to the necklace.

I have another black onyx bead convertible necklace using the same interchangeable fitting and shown left. The onyx necklace can easily be converted to a totally different look, using the rutilated quartz clasp shown right.
Technically it's the purchase of 2 necklaces, but the interchangeable clasps and necklaces mean I can create 4 quite different, contemporary looks. In eco terms this is sound too. Ask yourself why you need loads of separate chains for all those pendants, if you buy into an investment system like this one.
A few alternative clasp styles can be seen at the interactive Jorg Heinz site. If you wish you can also just watch the moving images on the Marcel Roelofs home page which features similar clasps to my rutilated quartz right. Remember many of these stones are one of a kind pieces.
